hi.
guess who got an awesome internship? this kid. i started interning at New Holland Brewery, which is pretty much my favorite brewery in the world. i have a lot of history with that place, not because i drink a lot but because my dad always dragged me around to whatever beer thing he was doing at the time.

anyhoo. my first assignment is to do band posters for december. i'm like..half way done. i also got a last minute poster/hand out request for a fundraiser...that's tomorrow, so whipped that out today.

oh and whipped that adorable little logo out in a half hour.

i really like this one.

Woo, hi again. I'm lurking in the library and mooching their internet. But I thought I'd pop in to say hello, and show some recent work.

Yeah so this is a commission I got Monday, to finish by Saturday morning at the latest. My favoritest manager at the restaurant I work at is getting hitched on Saturday and his mom called me up to do a huuuuge portrait of his soon to be wife and their adorable daughter (who is currently missing an eye, i know...kids are hard to draw). It's a collage of the symbols of their wedding, as well as some things they love. It's 4x4 feet, which is the LARGEST i've ever worked and I'm not going to lie, it's a little intimidating.

It was hard to keep my mouth shut at work, and to NOT stare at my boss to memorize his face....

Anyhoo, once I get the charcoal done, I'll be doing washes of burnt sienna to give it an aged old timey feel. Have to finish the kid, and..well, figure out what to do about the lady's neck, because...way too long. so either i move the shoulders up, or move the head down.....I'll figure it out.

This is my first commission that I'm not getting paid in alcohol for. Woo!

Hi all. I know, long time no post. Well, my parents cut off the internet at our house all summer {pretty sure they want to live back in the dark ages}. Siigh. So I will cram a big post of joy into all yer faces.

I have moved back home, in Saugatuck. It's been...riveting. Sarcasm. I've been doing a lot of job hunting because well, I need a real time, big girl job :)

I was invited to be a part of the Creative Process Project during the Detroit Design Festival. It was a pretty sweet gig. Basically a collection of different artists came to show their thought process behind a project. I chose to display the Nain Rouge project because i have a LOT of prints/sketches left from it. I also ran a tiny linocut workshop.
Here's muh set up:

Yeah, so my print got damaged so my friend Kevin helped me ..uh... destroy it some more. hahaha.

And I am also going to be in a Dia De Los Muertos show at the Starkweather Art Center in Romeo, MI. I have a really crappy photo of my piece. it's 2'x2' and it's the biggest thing I have ever painted. There's lots of glitter and gold and sparkles <3

Summer Fun

I never ever want to live in the boonies ever again. I get mauled everyday by horse/deer flies, mosquitos and ticks. A two minute walk equals four bites.

One night I went to bed and couldn't sleep because of all this buzzing noise. I turn the light on and 20 some mosquitos are buzzing above me on the ceiling. I spent an hour, running around my room in my undies murdering the shit out of them. Then the buzzing noise got stuck in my head. Needless to say, it was a sleepless night.

Someday I'll have my revenge, but in the meantime I'll just draw it.

okay, so, i done graduated! (YAAAAYYY!!!) it was a great ceremony (although honestly, i was half paying attention, as i was furiously texting back and forth with my friend (he was graduating too)). the robes were hot, miserable and my chords for the illustration were stupidly black.

nevertheless, i got my diploma, and now i'm a proud owner of a really expensive piece of paper (which hopefully won't turn out to be useless {nah, i kick too much ass}).

i moved back home for 3 days (i live in the living room for now until they get the guest room floor redone...yeah, the guest room), then i flew out to california with the parents and had a magical adventure time visiting san francisco and strawberry music festival. i saw my family (yaaay!) as well as two fantastic alumni (alum? alumnus? whatever). it was full of shits and giggles. literally.

then i was home for 12ish hours and drove to detroit, took down my senior wall (saaad), and then proceeded to crash around detroit for 4ish days, which made me REALLY miss detroit. so I want to move to detroit (crazy huh?) for at least a year. so we'll see...

aaaaaand lastly I'm finally working again (last minute of course) on a piece for this pretty awesome thing called America: Now and Here. Specifically I'm doing it for the Artist Corp which is a bunch of locals/youth.

This will be inked up and possibly glittered (you know i love me some glitter). This is kind the pencils and it will be filled with more lines and crazy anna lisa squiggles. going to california pushed my love of dia de los muertos even further. so expect more mexicanny goodness in the future. maybe i'll do another drawing a day thing but with that theme instead of monsters.

so i've been busy, but i promise more artiness soon. seriously i already filled up my first summer sketchbook. i just have to actually sit down and scan a million pages.

GRADUATING TODAY BRB!

Today is the big day I trip across stage, awkwardly throw some gang signs at the head of Illustration, Don Kilpatrick, and then go get muh fancy BFA in Illustration.

I am waaaaay too stoked. I will probably cry like a little weenie but whatever.

I wouldn't trade in my experience at CCS for a million dollars. Well, maybe 3 million...
The amount of progress my friends and I achieved was well worth the late nights, panic attacks, carpal tunnel, the stress, paper cuts and Xacto Blade fails.

While at CCS I found my art family, and I love every single one of them (even when they drive me batty). I can't wait to see where all of my friends and peers go in their careers. Best of luck to you all, but you won't need it.

I'll also maaybe miss being an RA. I've had some fantastic residents the last two years, as well as wonderful bosses and co-workers. The amount of ridiculousness that occurs when we all gather makes me all giddy. RAs, make sure you keep being awesome and don't let those crazy residents burn down the buildings.

The teachers also became my family. I now have a ridiculous amount of insane "aunts" and "uncles". They've joked with us, yelled at us, taught us, praised us, hugged us, encouraged us, got us out of troubling pickles, and of course, fed us. Thank you so much for the years of giving us the education of a life time.

And to Detroit, I never thought I'd love this city, but it is one of my favorite places (despite all the sirens) to be. I am sad to be leaving, but I'll be back. While I do plan to move out to CA, I do want to come back. I'll miss the Coney Island Hot Dogs the most <3. Hahaha.

Anyway, I'm going to go pace my room while I wait for the time to go to Motor City Brewery for one last slice of delicious pizza. Mmm.

When the weather starts getting all stormy, springing, warm and delightful, I get homesick. All I want to do is sit on the beach at Pier Cove with my dog Scooter (aka Pigdogpig), toss back a brewski and enjoy a storm rollin' in.

I also get homesick in the fall.

Here's muh zines. These were made for Mark Murphy's Zine workshop in our letter press class. It was pretty bad ass of him to come out from CA and hang with us nerds and squares for a week. WOO!

Anyhooo.

My zine is focusing on the juxtaposition (every time I write that, I want to write: Juxtapoz...like the magazine...gah) of the glamorous, delicate world of girl to the gritty, tough world of gangsta thug.

Mainly it's an excuse for pink stuff and glitter. Lots of glitter. I've been waiting four years to incorporate glitter....four long years and it's finally happened.

I'm pretty happy how they turned out. I learned a lot, and if anyone needs zines handled, come hollah at me.

Nain Rouge Somerset Project

So i have a handful of weeks left at CCS. It's terrifying, I turned in my last essay that I'll ever have to write for school ever again (unless the prof makes us do an essay or two for finals).

At this point, I'm not quite sure where I'm going. I'd love to go to San Francisco, as a) there's an ocean! b) there's family! c) it's SF! We'll see how it all plays out. I'm applying everywhere and panicking like a crazy person.

Good times.

Anyhoooo, this project has been in the works for a month or so now. The Detroit Shoppe, located at the Somerset Mall, sponsored a project, asking to illustrate how "Detroit moves you". Pretty much all I do in Detroit is eat food, go to school and go to the occasional concert. Since everyone was doing stuff like this, I decided to go with my passion; Monsters!

Detroit has a little urban legend. The Nain Rouge (or Red Dwarf), is the harbinger of doom, and appears before a bloodshed. Now, this isn't the most positive thing to focus on, with Detroit's rep already scoffed at by the haters. So, since things have been on the up and up, I figure, the Nain Rouge has given up on Detroit. My poster celebrates the disappearance of the red jerk.

Most of the image is letterpress. I think he turned out rather neat. A lot of people expressed interest in having him on a shirt, which I might have to make happen.

Snugz N Thugz

For printmaking, Mark Murphy (he's pretty bad ass, look him up), we have to do a zine, in 3 weeks, with a total of 16 pages. No big deal right? We gotta make 25ish of them (dag yo!).

Inspired by my weirdass nickname from Uncle Donnie (aka Don Kilpatrick III), one of my teachers, I decided to do the zine focusing on the theme of Snugz N Thugz. I can't remember how Snugz N Thugz became my nickname but it did. We even have an epic hand gesture for it.

So awesome.

Here's my mission statement for the project:

" To combine thug life with girly. To explore the juxtaposition of the delicate, bright world of girly to the dark gritty world of gangsta. By parodying iconic gang symbols and lyrics from rap songs, the two opposites shall be smashed together to form epicness."

Anyway, I took one of my sketches from the ole sketchadoodle book and kicked it up a notch.
Just something fun for me. Deal with it.

So this is a fun project i'm workin' up. I've been wanting to play with light filters affecting my work for the past semester.

Here's a rough of what's going to be happening. I'm just playing with stuff right now, but the back ground will probably have heaven/hell stuff going on instead of silly patterns. Also the ice cream cone is going to be properly drawn.

Here's how this works, you put a red filter pair of glasses on (or just hold a giant sheet of red plastic in front of your face) and it will filter out the red color, leaving the blue/black. Vice versa for the blue.

Got major tweaking to do, but I have time cuz it's spring break soon!

When I was in elementary school i would draw a snake popping out of a cake (it rhymed therefore it was funny) for people's birthday cards. At some point the kids got me to teach them how to draw proper snake/cake cards. For like a year solid everyone got snake in a cake cards.

I really hate snakes and if this happened in real life, i would pee my pants. so don't do it.

So today is our second snow day of the year. Which is saying a lot because CCS NEVER CLOSES!
After getting up and slacking for a few hours I decided to get some work done. Sort of.

I'm horrible at photography, also, despite what my boyfriend says, my camera kinda stinks. However, it was free, so I can't complain too much. Maybe I can get a new one for graduation? I have horrible luck with cameras. I've destroyed 2 so far along with 4 cell phones. I'm waiting for my computer to explode.

ANYWAY, I digress. Here is my attempt at taking picture of my mason jars (and photoshopping the label on because it looks nicer).

So yesterday was valentine's day, and i hope everyone had a good time, whether you're in a relationship or not. personally i think tonight i'm going to go out and buy day after candy and eat myself into a chocolate stupor. since my boyfriend is in chicago and my roommate is in florida there is no supply of candy, and i really love candy.

This is from my "Monster Per Diem" blog, but I just had to share it here because it cracks me up. Colin and I have dating for 3 years and 5 months as of yesterday and man oh man, do we love zombies. I drew him us as zombies for his valentine day card. D'aaww. Yes, i'm ripping his heart out but that's only because he's chewing on my arm. We started our relationship watching a zombie flick (dead and breakfast) and will probably end it as zombies eating brains.

Hehehhee.
I think i'm going to go to sixty monsters instead of fifty for my book. maybe.... i'm thinking about it.

Also in other news, I applied to Fisher-Price for a summer internship. It would be the content art gig, where you doodle stuff for the boxes. I applied this weekend but i'm already obsessively checking my email. So send some positive vibes yo!

I attempted wood burning on the lid to my Lightning Libations box.

1) smallish type is very hard to do
2) especially when it's that westerny decorative type. (what was I thinking?)
3) you can't hide mistakes very easily.

with the exception of the logo, i'm pretty happy on how the type turned out.

i'm so glad i didn't burn myself. i did however burn part of my oven mitt.

Don't mind my creeper face. I aged the box up a bit, i still need to take some sand paper and/or dremel tool to it.

wood burning smells good, but it sucks when the smoke goes straight into your mouth.

wedding cards continued

forgive my pjs. it's saturday and i refuse to go out because of work.

anyhoo. pretty much done with these bad lads.

i still have to find the perfect brown for the tree itself

i was contemplating getting this letter pressed but since i've been able to produce such nice results with my sexy sexy photo printer, i think i'll talk it over with the couple to be as it will be sooo much cheaper and faster and that way when they're out for winter break i can make them work by making them fold and stuff envelopes WOOOHAHAHAHAAA!

the pain of it is, is finding mass quantities of 7x10 paper kraft paper that's thick. i've found one site that i think i'll order a small batch from just to see. the paper i'm currently using is from a stationary set from staples. but when you have to by 10 packs of 10 pieces of paper and then the envelopes, it gets kinda pricy. so we'll have to see. if anyone knows of any good kraft paper stationary sites, lemme know.

Sooooo one of my besty bests friends from high school is "tying the knot". Literally.

Shawn and Amber are doing a Celtic knot tying ceremony, instead of the typical wedding thing. However instead of committing to the traditional "year and a day" contract, they're doing it for life! WOOO!

I know Shawn is oozing Irish/Scottish heritage (and a little native american too, if i remember correctly) and I'm sure Amber is as well, and they wanted to do something a tad different.

They're also not a typical couple either.

They're also broke college students :D

Which is where I step in.

I've been working on a design for their wedding card, focusing on celtic knots, hearts and trees (they like trees, the dirty hippies). I'm working on layout stuff, and i'm honestly not even thinking about the typography yet (though, a celtic style would probably be a good idea).

I have to clean up the line work and then transfer it to linocut. which should be interesting because it's going to be tiny and my carpal tunnely hands just scream thinking about it.

Still debating whether the leaves should be all black, green or just a line. hmm things to think about. And yes, i know the leaves suck, i just roughed it out to give people a general idea. i'm working on it, calm down.

The final leg of the Minimonsters

As much as I love these guys, I'm ready to move on to my next project(s) for senior studio.

The final projects consist of making a display box as well as finally getting all of the monsters sewn up into little plush dolls.

There will be many a late night panic sewing the next 18 days ( I just counted. holy crap holy crap holy crap!) Thank goodness for this brief little break and the fact that I'm where i should be in my other classes.

So here's everything I think I have left to do (i'm probably forgetting something):

2 final exams (math and art history)

here's it pretty much done. crit is tonight so we'll see what lil things i'll have to fix. i'm only okay feeling towards this piece. mainly because it's all happy and stuff. i have the original water color line work, and i think during winter break i'll be doing actual painting and making this creepy as much as possible.

Final Emilin Doll and Final Lion's Card.

Finally! I had 3 Emilin dolls to make, and one was hand sewn with a lot of mistakes, the second was pretty much an oops doll because of the many many many goof ups between myself and my friend Emily. The third one, perfect (with minor minor flaws).

Here's the tale of the nightmare of these dolls.

The first one as I said was hand sewn. The neck was too week to support the head and so the head flopped around too much. My friend (who i'm eternally grateful for) Emily Crowley, was kind enough to machine sew the doll, because I'm terrible at it. Problems ahoy! The machine wasn't really able to handle the mad curves of the hair. And there were goofs.

We bought boning to make the neck stiffer (hehe, trust me, we were giggling the whole time in Jo-Anns about boning). Emily's mom suggested just sewing it along the edges. However, neither of us didn't think that was strong enough to support the head. So we tried coiling the boning, but that never worked because it barley fit.

Fail, fail and fail. Around midnight we decided that we should just try what Emily's mom suggested. It worked and we facepalmed. Of course.

So the third doll was done thusly: hand stitched hair and claws, machine sewn body, and boning for support. This lil lady can hold her own head up. At some point, most likely winter break when I'm not freaking out, I'll redo the other 2 dolls.

Also, did the lion's card for this years contest. Whoooooo. Different approach than last year's cuddly cuteness. Probably won't win, but whatevs.

I got some doll snuggin' to do. Zzzz.

I might be working on doing patterns for dolls this next 2 weeks and getting them printed at www.spoonflower.com which is a pretty fantastic site. it allows you to upload images and prints them on fabric.

i want to have at least one done before i go to chicago...that'd be hella sweet. but let's see how it goes.

Fact 1) I got my Geek Week shirt today. Which means geek week started :D For those of you who go to CCS, you know this is a hella baller time.

a) the shirt came out hella tight.

b) i'm kinda excited to see the shirt on everyone this week. i can't help it. bad ego bad!

Fact 2) I love my gold fish. Okay that wasn't really a fact I just needed some other fact to make the first fact look more legit.

So if you haven't noticed, I have a little character moose person named Moop. Well, last year I was in Lift, a collectibles store in Royal Oak. I found a Plushform, which is a blank canvas doll that you can paint and customize. I bought it because it was on sale and I wanted to do something creative on it.

Problem was, I didn't know what to do. So it sat around.

Then I came up with Moop and thought the Plushform would be kind of cool to do with him. So I spray painted it blue. Then I moved back home and forgot about it, again.

Today I decided to finish it. Mainly because I want it for my monster line, and because I want to contact shawnimals and be like "Hi! I'm an illustrator and I want to learn everything about you", and not feel like a poseur. I repainted it with acrylic paint, then added the line work with sharpie paint marker. I epoxied the antlers on because i'm terrible at sewing and the paint has made the thing stiffer than rigor mortis.

He's incredibly cute and I love him. :3

I really want a sewing machine....

While in mentor training, i did a little doodle of a weird goldfish man on my papers to kill some boredom. I kept drawing the little guy and then i added a crown. King Goldfish came to be. This is attempt number 2 of ink drawing. There are obvious things to fix and such.

Contemplating adding washes of color. A little scared because I just love the lines but maybe color will take it to the next level.

Tomorrow at the butt crack of dawn (meaning around 8ish, if i wake up on time), I head back to my third favorite place in the world (#1 being a rock in yosemite mountains ((it was a good rock)), #2 the beach down the road)), Detroit!

I'll be living in the newish dorms as a camp mentor counselor thing for the CCS Pre college experience.

I'm super stoked. A) Air Conditioning B) I get to work with some younglings and get them fired up about art C) I get to work with my buddies and be only 40 minutes away from my boyfriend D) I will be making money and actually have money in my savings account for the first time in 3-4 years. and E)I'll be able to set up my room and have a desk to work on.

So yeah, i'll finally be able to crank on some of my work i've been wanting to do. Also Ill be able to hook up my scanner and scan all the sketchbook stuff i've been doing.

I'll also be reunited with my art supplies again. I left them in storage. WORST DECISION EVER!!!

Keep an eye out, as i'll be posting real stuff soonish.

100th post! Epic Win!!!

Yesterday my dad and i found Brew Your Own magazine at barnes and nobles and they had the newest issue! The very issue where my label is featured as a silver! I'm bummed they didn't use the picture of the label ON the bottle cuz it just looks silly by itself. Oh well. I love the Grand Prize winner, not a fan at ALL on the gold. I think bronze is just silly :) There were some other really great ones in the honorable mention, but i was too lazy to scan those in.

BUT YAAAYY!!!!! My art is in a magazineeeeeeeeee. I am super stoked. I've been getting prizes (gift certificates for brewing supply stores, brewing supplies and recipe book) in the mail for the last 2 weeks. Granted, I'm not going to use any of these because well, I don't home brew yet. Kinda can't do that in CCS dorms.... but when i move out, hot damn am i going to when i have a place of my own.

I'm also super stoked to be going back to detroit (where all my art supplies are) in 19 days (for a job!!).

I'm triple stoked because my dad's getting a new car and i'm getting his old buick. This will be the first time i'll have a car on campus. I'm going to have to re-learn how to drive :/

No i didn't do any art work for the 100th post. Suck it Trebek. This is damn good enough.

I had to do a last minute bizniz card design because my dad last minute decided to take me to a design talk at the grand rapids art museum. I'm happy with the way they turned out. I had to print them out at home which was a b*tch.

I'll probably redo them for a senior studio project. Might as well. I just like the fact that they're see throughish. I also need to do a new logo. I like my S but i don't LOVE it. So something needs to happen.

Time for food! Also, next post will be my 100th post! So thrillin'! Maybe i'll actually do something for it.

Silver for Old Webby

So I got an email a few days ago from a brewery supply store saying Congrats on winning the beer label contest. I was a tad confused because I had forgotten completely about submitting my beer labels to a label contest at Brew Your Own magazine. Brew Your Own is a home brewing magazine that my dad would get from time to time. I submitted my all of my labels during finals and I was crazy busy and well, I'd forget my own head if it wasn't attached.

I call up the owner of this store and she said, yes I won second place and I got some money. I checked Brew Your Own's website and there was no mention of the 2010 contest at all. I was still skeptical. Then the next day I got an official email saying Old Webby came in second. There was a dance of joy. I also got another gift certificate to another home brew supply store. My dad's getting the prize money and in turn, he's making me a Nutella Beer.

This is the first time i've won anything during college and it makes me so happy because I did put a lot of work, time and many phone calls to my dad, into this project. I was constantly calling my dad asking for "what alcohol lever would this beer be?" and "what do you think of this tag line?" or "do you like these colors?" My dad has made all the beers at some point or another and knew what he was talking about. Of course, I was constantly sending my teacher Dave Chow emails and hanging out in his senior studio class doing work. He really kicked my ass. I remember I kept going week after week trying to get the spider just right and it was never right. Very frustrating. Totally worth it though.

The artwork will be featured in the July/August issue of Brew Your Own. So if you see one, grab it and frame it. I know I will. :)

So yaaay, school is officially done and i'm back home.

For now anyway. I'm waiting to hear back from a job to see if they want my face.

I'm also possibly going to get a gig with saugatuck brewery to do small order labels for people.

so that's cool.

my boyfriend and bestie friend colin graduated this year and i was glad to see he didn't trip on stage. also a lot of chums from the illustration department graduated and i was sad to see them go because they've been a hoot.

i've been home for almost a week. my cousin is graduating high school which means i'll be busy with family. once i unpack my scanner (which means ihave to clean off my desk first), i'll start posting stuff up.

Yes the last week of classes!

Of course, I still have reviews, but once everything is

matted, mounted, scanned, put together,

it's party time.

I'll be honest, this semester has been one of the best I've had.

Somehow I've been able to survive it.

Good things that happened:

a) Made a book! It's awesome

b) had a great independent study where I made some rather

baller beer bottles (which I still have to print out and send off to a competition...)

c) learned so much more about illustrator

(so much I want to vomit)

d) I might be a ccs camp counselor which means I'd be in detroit for the summer OR

e) I finally applied to converse ( dream internship!)

I didn't have a lot of time and had to completely whip out shoe designs AND

a portfolio in less than 20 days. I managed to get that, plus all the normal load of homework, and 2 jobs. I'm very proud of myself, even if I don't get the gig. Which I hope I do....

f) I hope I get either e) or d) because if I don't, i'd really need a summer gig.

also the boyfriend is graduating, which makes me a tad sad, but at least he'll be able

to roam the world sowing his graphic design seeds...
